Flin Flon city council briefs: Mayor commends outgoing sergeant

Mayor Cal Huntley praised Shayne Smith, the now-former sergeant of the Flin Flon RCMP detachment, for his work in the community. Smith has moved on to another opportunity. His interim replacement is Cpl. Stacy Wiens, who worked under Smith.

Mayor Cal Huntley praised Shayne Smith, the now-former sergeant of the Flin Flon RCMP detachment, for his work in the community.

Smith has moved on to another opportunity. His interim replacement is Cpl. Stacy Wiens, who worked under Smith.

“Shayne was a pleasure to work with and he was…a good communicator [who had] good engagement with the city,” Huntley said at the Tuesday, Nov. 3 city council meeting, “and that’s something we really appreciate and hope that continues going forward.”

Smith arrived at the detachment in 2012 before becoming interim detachment commander and eventually dropping the “interim” label.

Northern voice

Northern Manitoba municipalities and First Nations are ready to speak with one voice to the people who want to represent them at the provincial level, said Coun. Colleen McKee.

McKee reported she participated in the recent Boreal Forest Summit and two related phone conferences.

Out of that, a group of northern stakeholders plans to communicate with the candidates in the 2016 provincial election to ensure the region is not overlooked.

“We want to let them know that we are here and when there’s any kind of development or investment being made in the North that we want to be the voice as part of what happens in our backyard,” McKee said.

McKee added that she would keep council abreast of further updates on the partnership.

Heaps of praise

A few councillors praised major events recently held in the community.

Coun. Leslie Beck used the word “great” to describe the Manitoba Contact Showcase, a three-day series of arts-related events.

Coun. Ken Pawlachuk complimented the Flin Flon Arts Council for its work to host the showcase.

Councillors McKee and Karen MacKinnon commended the Global Leadership Summit hosted by the Flin Flon Alliance Church. MacKinnon thanked the church and called the summit a feel-good event.

MacKinnon further spoke on the Northern Health Region’s Northern Health Summit and annual general meeting, both of which were held at the RH Channing Auditorium.

“I sat there thoroughly impressed with what has happened…under the leadership of [Northern Health Region CEO] Helga Bryant,” MacKinnon said while also complimenting the organization’s board of directors.

Beck took an opportunity to encourage residents to participate in next week’s Remembrance Day events, noting the importance of honouring veterans’ sacrifices.

Chamber connection

Huntley commended MacKinnon for stepping up to be president-elect of the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce.

MacKinnon will likely become president of the business-advocacy organization in the fall of 2017. This would mark the first time in memory that an active city councillor is also chamber president.

MacKinnon was quick to point out that McKee has also joined the chamber executive as a director.

MacKinnon thanked outgoing chamber president Tom Therien for his work over the past two years and congratulated new president Dianne Russell, saying she looks forward to working with her.

Proclamation

Huntley read a statement proclaiming November as Domestic Violence Prevention Month in Flin Flon and district.

Locally, the Women’s Resource Centre will be commemorating the month with awareness initiatives.

In 2013, more than one-quarter of all violent crimes reported to police in Canada related to family violence, according to Statistics Canada.

Just under half of all victims of family violence that year were victimized by a current or former spouse.
