Fire report: Flames, ice calls between false alarms

October was a busy month for the Flin Flon Fire Department, but no fire damage was reported. In total, 11 incidents were reported throughout Flin Flon, up from four in Oct. 2017, consisting mostly of fire alarms and vehicle collisions. Oct.

Oct. 5, 09:15: Call received for a gas leak on Church Street. Fire chief responded. City crews had punctured a propane line while digging storm drains. Fire chief monitored gas hazard levels while crews isolated the gas line.

Oct. 5, 14:24: Page received for a fire alarm Ruth Betts School. Fire Chief and engine 2 responded. Fire alarm was determined to be false.

Oct. 5, 18:58: A page was received for a large fire coming from the railway by Little Cliff Lake. Duty officer, engine 2 and rescue 1 responded. Fire crews found a large pile of railway ties located beside the main line into Hudbay.

Oct. 6, 17:54: A page was received for a residential fire alarm on Dadson Row. Duty officer and engine 2 responded. Fire crews found a smoke detector activated from cooking and the system was reset.

Oct 13, 15:42: A page was received for a three-vehicle collision at one of the entrances to the North of 53 Consumers Co-op and Highway 10A. Rescue 1 responded. No injuries were reported.

Oct 15, 13:06: A page was received for a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Main Street and North Avenue. Rescue 1 responded. No injuries were reported.

Oct. 24, 16:14: A page was received for smoke investigation around Centoba Park. Fire Chief and engine 2 responded. Fire crews found smoke coming from an outdoor fire pit. The homeowner was advised to extinguish the fire due to improper wood burning.

Oct. 27, 14:15: A call was received for a fuel spill in the Flintoba parking lot. Duty officer responded. Duty officer found a small gasoline spill due to a vehicle backing into the parked vehicle. Sand was deployed to reduce the fire risk.

Oct. 28, 06:53: A page was received for a vehicle collision on Main Street and Fifth Avenue. Rescue 1 and engine 2 responded. Minor injuries were reported.

Oct. 30, 13:09: A page was received for an ice rescue located at Hapnot Lake. Fire chief, rescue 1 and engine 2 responded. Fire crews found two victims had fallen through the ice on the west end of Hapnot Lake. Fire crews rescued the two victims using ice rescue suits and the rapid deployment craft. Both victims suffered from hypothermia and were transported to hospital.

Oct. 31, 02:42: Page received for a single vehicle roll over at Third Avenue and Callinan Street. Rescue 1 and engine 2 responded. No victims were located in the vehicle.
