Federal election results have started to trickle out in the northern ridings.

Conservative Party candidate Gary Vidal has struck an early lead, but with only a tiny fraction of polls reporting. No candidates are above 50 votes so far.

Vidal is up against Incumbent NDP Georgina Jolibois, Liberal Party candidate Tammy Cook-Searson, Green Party candidate Sarah Kraynick and People’s Party candidate Jerome Perrault.

At 9 p.m., Vidal led with 41 votes, leading the pack. Only 76 votes had been counted as of that time.

Only one poll was reporting in Churchill-Kewatinook Aski, showing the NDP’s Niki Ashton with a big lead early. Out of 165 votes counted so far, Ashton has received 140. Only Judy Klassen, the Liberal candidate, has a vote total in the double digits – she has received 16 so far.

Across the country, it seems the Liberal Party has taken an early lead, as votes from across Quebec, Ontario, the Prairie provinces and the territories trickle in. At 9 p.m. Manitoba time, the Liberal party had a lead in 101 ridings, ahead of all parties. The Conservative party is second with 77 ridings, while the Bloc Quebecois is ahead in 18 ridings, good enough for third place. The NDP sit fourth with leads nine ridings.
