Five candidates in the 2018 Creighton byelection discuss their priorities for the town

Steele Higgins

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I moved to Creighton in 2013. I am self employed and in the process of starting a business. I am also a landlord and distance education student. I am married to a lifelong Creighton-Flin Flon resident. I am extremely detail and business oriented. I pride myself on professionalism and fair treatment in everything I do. Work ethic and doing a job correctly to the very best of my abilities are my number one priority.

If elected to council, what do you hope to achieve?

I will do my best to achieve the growth and prosperity of the community through economic incentives for new and existing businesses and development areas for new residential properties. I will also be looking to bring in new revenue streams for the town by means of real estate development and recreational areas. Upkeep and improvement are very important to me and I will be an advocate for constant improvement to the infrastructure of the town.

What is the biggest issue facing Creighton and how should it be addressed?

Usable land space for new developments and commercial real estate. The expansion of specific areas and the redevelopment of others will bring in new revenues and residents, and increased recreation attractions will help bring in more tourism.

What initiatives would you support to grow Creighton’s economy?

Tax incentives for new businesses, community based loans and financing for start up or expansion of businesses, development of low cost areas for new construction, marketing and an online presence that will promote the community as a forward thinking hub of trade and industry.

Richard Masson

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a family man raising four daughters and actively looking for the next mine to make this community vibrant and prosperous for my children to grow up in. I have been working full time in the exploration business for the last 15 years. I am currently Exploration Manager for M’Ore Exploration Services which does contract work for Copper Reef Mining Corporation.

If elected to council, what do you hope to achieve?

I would like to attract new business to the community along with revitalizing the exploration and mining industry that this community was built upon. I also envision doctors and other health services more available to Creighton residents so they are not forced to travel to Prince Albert or Saskatoon. Creighton needs workers dealing with children with disabilities, mental health workers for youth and adolescents as well as an occupational therapist.

What is the biggest issue facing Creighton and how should it be addressed?

I think economic development is the biggest issue facing Creighton with the closing of the Reed Mine and the approaching closure of the 777 Mine. The biggest economic impact for this community comes from mining and I would support and encourage the development of the McIlvenna Bay deposit located in Saskatchewan owned by Foran Mining Corporation. This would have an immediate economic impact for the region and for the secondary businesses associated with mining.

What initiatives would you support to grow Creighton’s economy?

Creighton’s economy has deep roots in exploration and mining and I commend and support the Saskatchewan and federal governments’ initiative in helping junior mining companies in their exploration of northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba for flying airborne geophysical surveys on the Saskatchewan side in the vicinity of Creighton-Flin Flon during the summer of 2018. I also support any initiative that would encourage secondary businesses and industries that would complement the already existing mining industry.

Max Owen

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I moved to Creighton in 1968 with my wife Shirley. Cancer took Shirley away from us in July of this year. I have three children: Pam in Flin Flon, Dean in Saskatoon, and Petrina in Kelowna, BC. I have volunteered in our community since 1971, with the Creighton Parks Board, Creighton Community Club and Creighton Volunteer Fire Department. I enjoyed serving as an active member of our community.

If elected to council, what do you hope to achieve?

What I would like to accomplish is to gain the confidence and respect of the people of Creighton, people of all ages. I may not agree with everything that comes to the table but I will listen and investigate before making any decisions.

What is the biggest issue facing Creighton and how should it be addressed?

Sustainability, keeping our people in our community. This brings stability and income to the town. Increasing services such as medical service, medical transportation and housing. My late wife, Shirley, was committed big time to the hospital project, which is nearing completion. I will continue that commitment.

What initiatives would you support to grow Creighton’s economy?

It is important that we explore any and all initiatives proposed to grow Creighton’s economy, including the expansion of existing businesses and by attracting new businesses to the north. It is also important to keep lobbying the provincial government around mineral exploration in our area. High paying jobs are associated to most of the resource industry. We need to be the preferred home for people working in those industries as well as companies supporting them.

Anita Rainville

Tell us a bit about yourself:

Hello everyone, my name is Anita Rainville. I was born and raised in Creighton. I am presently the interagency coordinator at Creighton School and supervisor of the restaurant at Rocky View BnB. I am also a casual worker at Creighton Health and Creighton Homecare.

I believe in community and doing volunteer work for the school and various organizations, listening to people, hearing their concerns and advocating for them is my priority.

If elected to council, what do you hope to achieve?

I would like to help maintain the present status that the mayor and council have established, continue beautifying of the town, maintaining the Sportex, working on the water and sewer and the roads, etc. I would like to help better my home community by providing opportunities for all community members for inclusion.

What is the biggest issue facing Creighton and how should it be addressed?

The biggest issue I hear about is transportation. Medical and personal transportation is no longer available. Many people in our community do not have a vehicle or family to take them south. Supporting town council to address transportation; outlying communities have resolved transport concerns, it is my hope we will as well.

What initiatives would you support to grow Creighton’s economy?

A new non-profit organization is developing in Creighton, Northern Growing Abilities Greenhouse. Our vision is to provide jobs for our adults with cognitive diversity, commonly known as intellectual disabilities; provide volunteer work for low income families - for their work they will receive fresh vegetables so they may purchase other necessities;

Education for students; Perhaps seniors and elders will volunteer time and educate the volunteers and students as mentors. Fresh produce for local restaurants and general public.

Heather Strom:

Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Heather Strom. I am married to Dennis. I have lived in Creighton for 41 years. I was on Creighton town council previously for four years and am well aware of the extra time and commitment required. Wife, mother, grandmother, retired teacher from the public and community college systems, advocate for accessibility, advocate for a long term care facility, high interest in economic development are some of the adjectives I would use to describe myself.

If elected to council, what do you hope to achieve?

It would be hard to achieve anything in two years. Six other people have to agree with you. A board established to do a feasibility study for a long term care facility in Creighton, reestablishment of bus service to Saskatoon, and a grocery store.

What is the biggest issue facing Creighton and how should it be addressed?

There are many issues facing Creighton. All are big and important. I would think that health care, locally and out of town, would come close to topping the list. It is an issue that involves volunteers, people to contact provincial and federal politicians and possible funding agencies - not an easy task. It could be tied in with a board for a long term care facility.

What initiatives would you support to grow Creighton’s economy?

As for economic initiatives that I would support. anything that would attract new businesses and jobs. Each initiative would have to be examined on its own merits. I am asking for your vote in the byelection.

An advance poll will be held from 4 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Town of Creighton office. Election day polls will be held from 9 am to 8 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Town of Creighton office. Voters must bring one piece of identification to the polls.
