The Creighton trailer court has a new name, paying tribute to one ofthe community’s most prominent figures.
The previously unnamed area was officially renamed Banting Court in a small ceremony at the site July 24. Street signs with the new name were unveiled during the event.
The site was named to honour former Creighton Mayor Syd Banting, who passed away last year. Banting served as the town’s mayor for two terms, holding Creighton’s highest local office from 1974-1982.
“The Banting family would like to sincerely thank the Town of Creighton for this commemoration of our dad and husband,”read an official statement from the Banting family. Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler read the statement during the ceremony.
“Sid called Creighton his home since the early 1960s. When he first came to the north to work in exploration and mining, he raised his family here and always stressed the importance of community, whether it was volunteering time to coaching hockey, helping our neighbour or serving for two terms as mayor.”
