Creighton Community School drama students have been working since February for this week’s Dessert Theatre.
The curtain will draw both Wednesday and Thursday evening with the group’s performance of The Ransom of Miss Elverna Dower, the story of a teacher being kidnapped.
Matt Reimer and Paige Walker play two students who have kidnapped their English teacher, Miss Dower, in hopes of getting ransom money from the school’s principal, played by Michael Manns.
“Things don’t go as planned,” said Reimer.
The story unfolds as Manns’ character comes to realize that telling lies doesn’t help the situation, a lesson Marieka Angell says applies to real life situations.
“Actions have consequences and we need to face them, not run away,” said Angell, who plays the role of a Viking named Erik.
Adjusting Well
The cast of 15 has had their ups and downs since rehearsals began in February. Due to a family emergency, one character was replaced in the production with just a week’s notice.
The cast will have two more opportunities to run through the production before Wednesday’s performance.
Are they ready?
“You’re never really ready,” director Tracy Hovland laughed.
Tickets for Wednesday and Thursday’s performance will be available through any cast member as well as at Coutts’ Convenience Centre in Creighton.
All funds raised from the Dessert Theatre will go toward the school drama club’s trip to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People in Winnipeg.
The curtain will rise at 7 pm in the school’s gymnasium followed by dessert, which the foods class will have prepared.
