The situation around COVID-19 in Manitoba and Saskatchewan is staying on the same path as last week - low in Manitoba, escalating in northern Saskatchewan.

New cases of the disease continue to be reported in far north Saskatchewan, with five new cases reported in the region May 12 - three in Beauval, two in La Loche.

Saskatchewan currently has 193 active cases and has reported 573 cases since the COVID-19 outbreak began. Out of those 193 active cases, 151 of them are in the far north, with another 29 in Saskatchewan's north region. Outbreaks are still in effect in Beauval, La Loche, Lloydminster and Meadow Lake.

Both outbreaks in Lloydminster and Meadow Lake were declared at local health facilities - no new cases have been reported in either outbreak for several days. Outbreaks in medical facilities are declared after a single case is reported, as per provincial health administration guidelines.

Outside northern regions, Saskatchewan's COVID-19 situation has remained static for days. No new non-northern cases of the disease were reported May 10, 11 or 12. The latest non-northern case of COVID-19 was reported in central Saskatchewan May 9.

Meanwhile, only one new case of COVID-19 was reported in Manitoba May 12, found in a cluster of cases centred around a Brandon-based trucking business. Out of 290 Manitobans who have tested positive for COVID-19, 251 people have recovered from the disease.

Manitoba has ceased doing daily government updates on the disease, choosing instead to hold three briefings each week - one each on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Both provinces are still slated to move forward with the next phase of their reopening plans - Saskatchewan will move on to large-scale reopenings May 19, while Manitoba will hit their next step as early as June 1.
