City council is working to promote Flin Flon – and it shows.

Praise for Coun. Karen MacKinnon came at council’s Tuesday, Sept. 19 meeting after she was nominated for Travel Manitoba’s Award of Distinction.

The award honours individuals who go above and beyond in promoting their home communities and regions.

“To me the thing that you have to understand about Coun. MacKinnon is, she is so great at networking,” said Coun. Colleen McKee. “She is one of the people in our community that does so much when it comes to promoting our community. It’s through all the networks that she establishes through all of the places that she goes. She travels a lot and…when she’s out of the community, she is promoting our little town, so I think that’s really important and I’m really happy that she’s being acknowledged for that this year.”

Mayor Cal Huntley called the Travel Manitoba award “very prestigious” and said MacKinnon is “heart and soul Flin Flon, there’s no doubt about that.”

Travel Manitoba presented the award to Raquel Lincoln of southern Manitoba. MacKinnon was one of three finalists. She missed the council meeting to attend the awards ceremony.

To further promote Flin Flon, council voted to spend $3,700 plus GST on an ad in the 2018 edition of a magazine being published by Travel Manitoba.

McKee, who made the motion, emphasized the importance of marketing Flin Flon.

Good luck

Huntley took time during his closing remarks to wish the Flin Flon Bombers good luck this season.

“We have a fairly new team, very few veterans back and I don’t want to jinx them or anything like that, but it was nice to pick up two wins to start the season,” he said, referring to Flin Flon’s season-opening victories against La Ronge.

The city is a major supporter of the Bombers this season. In August, council voted to sponsor the club to the tune of $7,500 by deducting that amount from the team’s ice rental fees at the Whitney Forum.

Miscellaneous

Council offered to sell the city-owned lot at 2 Burke Avenue to a neighbouring couple for $2,500 plus GST.

Council reviewed the animal control officer’s report for August. The report noted one dog was euthanized while 28 residential complaints were received in addition to one each from the RCMP and
Canada Post.

Council voted to donate use of the RH Channing Auditorium to the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA’s two-day spay and neuter clinic, which took place last weekend.
