Security personnel and RCMP in Pelican Narrows teamed up for another bootlegging seizure in the community last week - the second such bust in the past month.

Pelican Narrows RCMP got a tip from community safety personnel operating the checkpoint on the way into the community June 20 that a person was en route to Pelican Narrows with a large amount of alcohol in their vehicle for resale use. The vehicle had gone through the checkpoint and was on its way into town.

RCMP located and pulled over the vehicle. The driver, who was the sole occupant and registered owner of the vehicle, was told they were under investigation for suspected bootlegging.

Before searching the vehicle, the driver told police they had a couple cases of beer inside. That turned out to be an understatement - inside the vehicle, RCMP found 32 60-ounce bottles of hard liquor including whisky, vodka and liqueur, along with 164 cans of beer. All told, RCMP found around 115 litres of alcohol inside the vehicle.

The driver, who was not identified by police, has been charged under section 138(1) of the provincial Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act, which makes it an offense to sell or offer to sell, display or keep beverage alcohol without proper permits.

The driver is scheduled to make their first court appearance October 6 in Pelican Narrows.
