Many Faces Educational Centre will see some new faces this school year.

Several of the school’s existing teachings and classes will remain the same, but two major changes will be coming to the school for this year.

The school will have its own separate administration for the first time. Mark Lucas, who taught at Many Faces for five school years before heading into administration, has been named the school’s first principal.

There may be a service road running between the two buildings, but up until this year, both Many Faces and Hapnot Collegiate were joined at the hip administratively. In the past, Hapnot administrators, especially the principal and vice-principal, were responsible for the operation and organization of the school.

“The obvious change is that there’s a body here more consistently and more often. Before, you kind of had to bounce back between the two schools,” said Lucas.

Teacher Daniel Dillon, who previously taught classes at Hapnot, will move to Many Faces this year to set up shop. Dillon will pursue work that Lucas characterizes as “big-picture learning” – the same kind of technologically-enhanced, student-driven work that helped him make a name at Hapnot as an education innovator.

“There’s still going to be some traditional learning and some alternative learning – likely not much different than it has been in the past,” said Lucas.

Dillon’s work with the school will be more aimed at the subject of his thesis than some of his previous teaching within Flin Flon, with a focus toward interactivity, individualized, hands-on learning and technological literacy, said Lucas.

Often, Many Faces is the best option for adults in Flin Flon hoping to earn a high school diploma, due to a flexible curriculum and smaller class sizes. That directive will not change, said Lucas.

“With Many Faces as a school, it isn’t drastically different this year. I taught here for five of my seven years – I can tell you it would be probably about the same and still trying to do the best we can for all those people who don’t fit into Hapnot.”
