Bunny Burke has received credit from her peers for the years and years of hard, behind-the-scenes work with the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce.

Burke, a tireless volunteer and community advocate, announced she would be stepping down from the organization’s executive. At the chamber’s April 16 meeting, Burke was celebrated by fellow chamber members for more than 40 years of work with the group.

“We just want to take a minute to honour everything that you’ve done for the community – specifically through chamber, but it’s much bigger than that,” said chamber past-president Dianne Russell of Burke’s contribution to the organization.

Burke served with the chamber in several different capacities over the years, including a spell as the group’s president. She also served as a fundraising co-ordinator, secretary and treasurer for the organization. Most recently, Burke sat on the chamber’s eight-person advisory committee. As well as working with the chamber, Burke also volunteered with a wide swath of community organizations in and around Flin Flon.

Over that time, Burke helped usher in a new generation of volunteers, including several who remain affiliated with chamber.

“I came to understand that, as people worked together, they become friends. Community volunteering brings people together and I know that was what it was for you in many levels and I know it was for all the people around you,” said Russell.

“She is the reason that I joined the chamber,” added chamber secretary Kory Eastman.

“She understands that there is an honour in service.”

Burke credited former chamber president Doug O’Brien as being an important driver behind her getting involved with the local chamber. Burke also thanked current chamber member Dave Kendall.

In a short address to the group, Burke thanked chamber members and subtly stated that while she may be stepping down from the group in an official capacity, she may still be interested in volunteering.

“I’d like to thank all the chamber members for acknowledging me. I really don’t volunteer to be recognized. I like to volunteer because I like people. I’d like everybody to keep up the good work and carry on,” she said.
