Flin Flon’s first legal cannabis retail location is inching closer to reality, according to city officials.

At the Oct. 1 city council meeting, both Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley and City chief administrative officer Glenna Daschuk provided an update, the first such update in months, on the state of affairs with cannabis retail in Flin Flon.

Neither Huntley or Daschuk went into any further detail about what stage of development any retailer was currently at, but Daschuk confirmed that the retailer had found a location to set up operations.

“I think I can go as far as saying that they have a location,” Daschuk said.

“There is a location and they are moving forward.”

Last year, city council approved a change in the community’s zoning bylaws to approve cannabis retail within Flin Flon, but only within the existing uptown business area. Most of the area zoned for retail is along Main Street.

The provincial government selected a primary and a standby retailer to be licensed to sell cannabis and related products in Flin Flon. The primary company, a numbered company identified as Garden Variety, is based in Winnipeg and is formed by five separate entities, including First Nations ownership. Auxly Cannabis, a Toronto-based company, was selected as a standby retailer.

Earlier this year, Garden Variety reached out to the City regarding properties available along Main Street, as well as some members of the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce. In July, Huntley said the City would be willing to provide support and welcome a licensed and legal cannabis retailer.

Cannabis was legalized for sale in Canada Oct. 21, 2018, but Flin Flon has not had a legal, fully licensed and approved cannabis seller.
