A byelection will be held in October to fill a vacant seat on Creighton town council.

Mayor Bruce Fidler and town council members approved a motion at the Aug. 8 council meeting to proceed with a byelection.

The call for nominations to fill the vacancy will be open until Aug. 29. An advance poll will be held on Sept. 19, with a final election day slated for Oct. 3.

Any Creighton resident looking to run in the upcoming byelection can file paperwork at the town office.

The byelection announcement comes weeks after the death of councillor Shirley Owen. A resident of Creighton and a well-known volunteer and community member, Owen died on July 4 after a fight with illness. Owen was in the midst of her third term on town council and continued to take part in council meetings and volunteer causes, including operation of the Creighton Community Hall, while pursuing treatment.
