The Flin Flon Aqua Centre has shut down after structural concerns were found with the building.

The pool, weight room and all services operated out of the building were cancelled late in the evening Jan. 28 and will be closed until further notice from the City of Flin Flon.

Any exact concern with the building or when the pool will reopen is not yet known, but City recreation director Nicole Hartman said the focus is on the building itself.

“It’s the building itself we’ve been having issues with,” she said.

“Right now, we don’t really know how long it’s going to be closed for. We are trying to find out what exactly is going on and find a timeframe for the closure.”

On Jan. 29, city workers were at the building, which had been cordoned off from public access. A work crew is looking into any possible issues with the building.

The closure marks the third time in the past six months that the centre has been shut down. Back in July, the Aqua Centre was shut down for weeks for renovations. The building is typically closed each summer for about a month for general fixes to the building, pool and weight room. In the fall, the building was closed again for several weeks for further repairs.

Back in September, Flin Flon city council approved a measure to apply for funding for a replacement to the Aqua Centre. The total price tag for a replacement to the centre is eyeballed at around $8.8 million, with most of the cost coming from federal and provincial government grants.
