Flin Flon will have a head start on National Addictions Awareness Week, beginning with events throughout the area this week.

Plans for the nationally recognized week, running from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30, will begin a few days early, with events starting on Nov. 22 with a colouring contest.

The Nov. 23 Flin Flon Bomber game will include free tickets for all area students as part of the week, with games, prizes and an information table all set up to provide information on the full week’s activities.

Some of the events planned include a youth movie day on Nov. 24 at the Denareplex, starting at 1 p.m., and a family fun skate at the Creighton Sportex on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. A family games night at the Salvation Army will happen on Nov. 27, with a free family swim at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre starting at 6:30 pm on Nov. 30.

One of the biggest events scheduled is “Celebrating Sobriety,” taking place at the Eagle Rose Holistic Healing and Teaching Lodge on Nov. 24. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the event will include a supper, story sharing and a family dance until 11 pm.

Organizers hope to encourage healthy living and raise awareness of addiction and related issues throughout the week.

“In a small community, there’s always a perception that there’s nothing to do,” said Lannie Bosman-Leptick, Flin Flon, The Pas and Area program supervisor for AFM.

“The events are planned in a way to emphasize that there’s many opportunities to engage in healthy lifestyle choices that don’t involve alcohol and substances.

“In that, we also have an attempt to create some education and awareness.”
