Highlights from Tuesday’s Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce meeting, held at the Friendship Centre Restaurant:

Flinty’s award

President Tom Therien invited both chamber members and the general public to next week’s ceremony in honour of Flintabbatey Flonatin.

As The Reminder reported Monday, Flinty will accept an award from Travel Manitoba this coming Wednesday, April 22.

The chamber will host the luncheon at The Unwinder.

Flinty won the hearts of Manitobans during a recent online poll that named him the top tourist attraction in the province.

Chamber members in attendance Tuesday unanimously voted to invite the Flinty Committee out for the ceremony with the suggestion that chair Dave Price accept the award on Flinty’s behalf.

Those interested in attending April 22 ceremony may RSVP chamber manager Michelle Reid at 204-687-4518.

A reel success

Director Dave Kendall reported that Flinty’s Fishing Derby, held by the Rotary Club, was a success in its first year.

The event took place last Sunday, April 12 off the shore of Sally’s Beach. Nine fish were caught with 570 lines in the water.

The derby piggybacked on The Pas’ annual Bill Bannock Fishing Derby.

Kendall said he was impressed with the amount of support the local derby received from local businesses.

Numbers were down in The Pas this year, though Kendall said he doesn’t think it was in due to Flin Flon’s derby.

Up next

Director Linda Allen reminded those in attendance of the Flin Flon Community Choir and Flin Flon Arts Council’s production Les Misérables set for May 1, 2 and 3.

In other arts new, the Manitoba Arts Network will be hosting a workshop both in The Pas and in Flin Flon in June.

Fundraiser

It was noted that the Chamber’s annual radio auction will be held on May 30 with items on display the prior evening at the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre.

The auction, a major chamber fundraiser, is usually held in the fall but was moved up to the spring.

Chamber members donate items that are auctioned off by phone.
