Bomber Game Report

A big win on the road Friday night has put the Bombers one game away from moving on.

The Bombers held on to snag a 3-1 win, beating the Battlefords North Stars in North Battleford for the first time this season.

The game was quiet until halfway through the first period, when Gabriel Shipper opened the scoring by sneaking into the slot and beating Michael Harroch. In the second period, Shipper did it again, beating Harroch from the slot to give Flin Flon a 2-0 lead. Shipper's parents were in the crowd watching their son score, having flown to Saskatchewan from their California home to see their son play.

The Stars and Bombers would continue at it hammer and tong, with the Bombers finding ways to get ahead. Brett Wieschorster pushed the team ahead on a penalty kill late in the second, blocking not one but two point shots and helping to preserve the two goal lead.

Wieschorster's efforts would pay off on the scoreboard in the third, getting a puck past Harroch to make it 3-0.

The Stars would get desperate late, pulling Harroch with more than 10 minutes remaining on the clock while the two teams were at 4-on-4. With 7:27 remaining in the third, the Stars would steal the shutout from Flin Flon and Cal Schell, getting a marker from Keiton Klein. Battlefords put on a late surge, but their goalscoring was much like the HockeyTV feed from the Access Communications Centre - largely nonexistent. Zak Smith scored an empty net goal, but it was waived off by the on-ice officials due to an offside. The end result would not be affected.

The Bombers will take a 3-2 series lead back to the Whitney Forum for Game 6 Sunday night, where a win will clinch a series victory for Flin Flon.

Cal Schell made 29 saves in the win - Harroch stopped 42 pucks in a losing effort.

Elsewhere in the league, Melfort will live to play another day with a 5-1 win over Yorkton, moving their series to 3-2 Terriers. Humboldt also takes on a 3-2 series, thanks to a 4-1 win over La Ronge. Estevan will seek to eliminate the Notre Dame Hounds Saturday night in Game 5 of their series.
