On Wednesday, June 9, Frontier Collegiate Institute in Cranberry Portage held its annual Achievement and Undergraduate Awards Night. A variety of student works were on display illustrating the efforts of the students and staff throughout the 2003-2004 school year. Displays included some examples of student writing, art work, Home Economics projects, Industrial Arts projects, and computer projects. Many students, parents, staff, residence counsellors, and community members came out to see the displays of the students' achievements. The more formal part of the evening program was the presentation of awards to students who have distinguished themselves in various aspects of school life. The Attendance Award is presented to students who have outstanding attendance during the 2003-2004 school year. These students have missed two or less classes in any of their full credit courses and one class or less in any of their half credit courses. Mrs. Cheryl Anderson, FCI's drama and dance teacher, presented the following students with their Attendance Awards: Carla Day; Cody Fullerton; Karena Monias; Cheryl White; Kimberly Monias. Citizenship Awards are presented to students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of citizenship Ð by acting responsibly and by being helpful in both the classroom as well as extra curricular activities. Our resource teacher, Mrs. Audrey Neufeld had the pleasure of presenting this award. The recipients of the 2004 Citizenship Awards are: Melanie Soshycki; Samantha Mitchell; Jacqui Law; Olivia Caribou; Jessica Beardy; Mitchell Flett; Corey Beardy; Jeffrey DuBois; Edwin Hudson; Fraser Bjornson; Cody Fullerton; Serena Mason; Sheila Dumas; Krystal Bighead; Lawrel Budd; Melissa Barnhart; Jenna Fullerton; Nadia Green; Tiffany Umpherville; Kelvin Leslie; Dustin Sinclair; Lindsay Kosmenko; Charlene Caribou; Rick Roussin; Heather Thomas; Leigh Johnston; Nazia Berens; Monica Soulier; Vera Dumas; Devin Wood; Melissa Houle. Rona Campeau was presented the Frontier Collegiate Later Literacy Award for the 2003-2004 school year. Rona received the award for her commitment and consistent effort during the time she participated in her Later Literacy program. The skills she learned will assist her not only during her high school career but during all fazes of her life. Students who achieve 80% or more in their courses are given Honour Roll Certificates. FCI's principal, Mr. William Taylor and vice-principal, Mr. Wayde Knight presented these awards. The top academic students in each grade are given Academic Excellence Awards. Mr. William Taylor and Mr. Wayde Knight presented the following students with their awards: Senior 1 Ð Daniel Fosseneuve; Senior 2 Ð Fraser Bjornson; Senior 3 Ð Candice Turner. The L. G. Nelson Scholastic Effort Award is given to two students (one male, one female) in Senior 1-3, who have made an outstanding effort to do well in their work in all of the classes they have taken. Mrs. Debbie McNeill, the Home Economics teacher, was enthused to present this award to the female recipient, Kyra Nasee, as well as to this year's male recipient, Jeffrey DuBois. Not every student who works hard can make the honour roll. Frontier Collegiate recognises students in Senior 1-4 who do not make the honour roll, but who pass all of their courses and have made a consistent effort to do well in these courses. See 'Talented' P.# Con't from P.# Scholastic Effort Awards are presented to one male and one female in the school who have exhibited diligence and who have made a consistent effort to do well in all of their courses throughout the year. This year we were pleased to present this award to Leigh Johnston and Cheryl White. Students in Senior 1-4 who have made an outstanding contribution to the extra-curricular aspects of school life are also recognised. The criteria for the Extra-Curricular Participation Award includes passing all courses throughout the year, regular attendance at school, participation in extra-curricular activities, leadership, and responsibility in carrying out duties. For the 2003-2004 school year the male recipient of the Extra-Curricular Participation Award is Fraser Bjornson and the female recipient is Jacqui Law. Senior one teacher, Mr. Donnie Grenier presented this award. Frontier Collegiate is proud of the efforts that Coach Cam Cairns, Mr. Donnie Grenier, and the Winterhawk hockey team put forth throughout this past hockey season. To recognise the efforts of a member of the male hockey team, Frontier Collegiate has established an award for that member of the hockey team that best combines achievement in hockey and in academics. Stanley Umpherville is the recipient of the 2003-2004 Opasquiak Award presented by Coach Cam Cairns. Further, an award has been established in honour of our first female hockey team coach, Mr. Joe Alcock. The Alcock Award is given to that female hockey team member that shows dedication not only to the sport of hockey, but also shows dedication to their academics. This year's recipient of the Alcock Award is Melanie Soshycki. Mr. Brian McMillan also presented other members of FCI's girl's hockey team with various sportsmanship awards. Students, who participate and excel in sports and who do well in their schoolwork, are considered for the Athletes of the Year Awards. These awards were presented by our physical education teacher Mr. Brian McMillan and our dedicated volunteer coach, Jennifer Janzen. The recipient of the Senior Female Athlete Award for 2004 is Lindsay Kosmenko. The recipient of the Senior Male Athlete Award for 2004 is Charles Harper. The recipients of the Junior Female Athlete Award for 2004 are Nadia Green and Melanie Soshycki. The recipient of the Junior Male Athlete Award for 2004 is Fraser Bjornson. Mr. Cameron McLean and family sponsor an award each year in remembrance of their son Dennis, who was a student at FCI. Dennis died accidentally while he was still in high school. Dennis especially enjoyed Industrial Arts and his family established this award to recognize students who excel in this field of study. To be considered for the Dennis McLean Memorial Award a student must take a minimum of one full credit in an Industrial Arts course. For outstanding interest and ability in Industrial Arts, Carson Patchenose is the recipient of this award, which was presented by our industrial arts teacher, Mr. Chris Waterman. Mr. Brian Hutton, the mathematics teacher at Frontier Collegiate, had the opportunity to have students participate in the Canadian Mathematics Competition offered through the University of Waterloo. Two students completed this math contest and were presented with awards. We would like to congratulate Fraser Bjornson and Patrick Sinclair for a job well done in this math contest. We had the pleasure of watching many of our students in action as many performances were put on during our achievement night. Frontier Collegiate is blessed with many talented students. As such, we were pleased to have some of that talent exhibited through some wonderful musical performances. "Stairway to Heaven" was performed by Cody Fullerton and Caitlin Sinclair on guitar and Melanie Soshycki on the piano. Melanie Soshycki played "Joy" on the piano. "The First Cut is the Deepest" was sung by Melissa Houle, accompanied by Cody Fullerton on guitar, Jacqui Law on bass, and Eric George on drums. Our dance crew, instructed by Mrs. Cheryl Anderson, also treated us to a special performance. Moving in rhythm to the music of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes were: Lindsey Ballantyne, Muriel Beardy, Taffany Buck, Carla Day, Monica Flett, Melanie Houle, Claudia Martin, Krystal Martin, Summer Martin, Desiree Michelle, Teresa Peskonnas, Christine Okemow, and Ann Spence. Thank you for putting on such a splendid performance. The drama class presented three plays, which focused on issues that plague teenage life. Jeffrey DuBois and Monica Flett performed "The Party". Carla Day and Blair Captain performed "Suspended". Finally, Monica Flett and Blair Captain performed the play, "Growing Up". We would like to commend these students on a job well done. We would like to acknowledge all of those students and staff who put in countless hours of work preparing for this event. We also appreciate all of those who were able to come out and witness the many successes made by our students and staff throughout this school year. We appreciate the continued support.
