Flin Flonners will have a chance to speak with councillors about the replacement to the Flin Flon Aqua Centre at a meeting next week.

The first meeting in relation to the project will be held at City Hall in council chambers June 7, starting at 6 p.m. The meeting will be based around the project’s design, location and budget. No firm details about what will be mentioned on either subject has been confirmed to The Reminder as of press time, but plans have apparently been changed recently.

“Alterations were completed to the Aqua Centre design to take into account soaring prices due to supply chain issues and global instability. An official public consultation has been set for June 7,” reads a statement from the City on the meeting, released as part of a semi-regular series of updates issued about the project.

While details have been mentioned regarding the project by members of city council and by City executive staff, no official unveiling of a plan has been held by the City as of press time.

In the past, city councillors have discussed plans for the pool replacement to be centred around the former Willowvale Curling Club area. An approximate budget for the project of around $9 million has been discussed by council members, with plans originally meant to be similar to pool facilities built recently in communities in Saskatchewan like Melfort and Kindersley. Those plans may be subject to change to cost, construction or other factors.

Last summer, the City of Flin Flon received the green light to build a replacement for the community’s former indoor pool facility, with just over $3.4 million coming from the federal government and just under $2.9 million coming from the province. Funding for the program came from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), which has been used before locally to fund renovations at the Flin Flon Community Hall and at the City’s bus garage.

Questions about the project can be submitted to the City in advance by calling City Hall at (204) 681-7511.
