A group of cottagers are urging MTS to establish complete cell phone coverage between Flin Flon and The Pas. The Rocky Lake North Shore Cottagers Association has made that request of the communications provider, suggesting the existing Mitchell Lake tower could be utilized for the service. "There is a lifestyle expectation required in attracting and retaining residents in The Pas and Flin Flon," wrote Rob Vipond, association president, in the recent letter. "As a large corporation vying for the largest share of cell customers, it would be a tremendous sales tool to have a monopoly on essential cell service covering the area between The Pas, Flin Flon, and Thompson." Vipond wrote that the increased coverage would make good business sense for MTS because tourists visiting the region "would want to deal with the cell service provider that serves them during their visit." He felt the service could provide not only convenience but also possible "life-saving communications for boaters, hunters, campers, etc., utilizing both the Clearwater and Grass River provincial parks." Vipond sent copies of the letter to the governments and chambers of commerce in both Flin Flon and The Pas. Neither Vipond nor an MTS spokesperson could be reached for comment yesterday.6/18/2004
