Hoping every reader had a happy Christmas season and wonderful New Year’s celebrations. 2018 is shaping up well to be the best year so far, and the Flin Flon Arts Council and local musicians are doing their best to make that happen, if January is anything to judge by.

Loaded Mic 3 will kick off the year at Johnny’s Social Club on Jan. 13, with Trevor Gordon Sytnick producing and emceeing. These are special musical events for our region, highlighting original talent of local performers.

Sytnick is a relatively recent addition to the teaching staff at Hapnot Collegiate but he has a whole other life as a singer-songwriter. He introduced Loaded Mic nights to the Johnny’s Social Club line-up last year to help other musically talented folks in the area present their own original material to an audience. This third edition will feature born and bred Flin Flonners like Beaner Deans performing his own songs. Another staple of the Flin Flon arts scene, Mark Kolt has been working on some new tunes and may have polished up some older models for this event as well. Other long time citizens who will perform their own songs are Lane Laderoute and Derek Kemp.

More recent converts to life in the north will also grace the stage, including Angela Ishaka and Emily Sparling. Ishaka is a multi-talented pianist, and songwriter. Sparling will bring her own “kinda country” vibe to the evening and will wow you all, I’m sure. Joining these notables will be Jennifer McLean, Natalie Milligan and the ever awesome ImriAnnaJones who will interpret the music of some of the best songwriters around in ways only they can.

The event is sure to make for a fantastic evening and the tickets are only $15 each. Tickets are available at the Orange Toad beginning on Jan. 6. Doors for the event open at 7 pm and the music starts at 7:30 pm. You can bring your own eats, and beverages are available for sale at the venue.

NorVA Gallery’s new exhibit by Canadian artist Joseph Reyes is now on display. Reyes, whose work has been featured at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa,  specializes smaller scaled pen and ink drawings. He currently lives and works in  in Seoul, Korea.

“I exhibit art using pseudonyms, incorporate fictional backgrounds, and even hired an actor as a stand-in. This is because I believe a fictitious artist can be more compelling than the real one,” Reyes writes on his website. He often draws images made up of smaller images and text which are visual diary entries that allow an intimate window into the artist’s psyche. He  has said he enjoys exploring the need for public expression versus the need for personal privacy.

This exciting show will run for a month, so please try to get down to the gallery to see it.  Their hours are posted on their website.
