No time for small talk - we have to dive right into this column. There is lots happening in our little burg in the next couple of weeks.
On March 7, the Womens’ Resource Centre (WRC) will present an evening’s entertainment in honour of International Women’s Day. Ann Ross and Doug McGregor are hosting the event on their behalf, as they have for many benefit concerts in our area. The show will be at 7:30 pm. at 183 Murton Boulevard. The WRC will also be facilitating many other events during the week, including at the Eagle Rose Healing Lodge and Flin Flon Ski Club chalet. The Ham Sandwich Theatre group is almost ready to mount their new production. They will perform a home-drafted version of “Shock Corridor” on the stage of the R.H. Channing Auditorium March 13-14. This play began life as a B-movie by Sam Fuller in 1963 and has been updated for the stage by our very own Raphael Saray.
The production we will see is co-directed by Saray and his wife, Susan Gunn. It features an all-local cast with several actors who have led us, with their recent performances, to expect a highly entertaining evening. Alain Lachapelle, Landice Yestrau and Tristan Barteski lead the cast of thousands - according to Saray, though he does say more seriously that they are ready to perform an incredible show.
Fuller, who died in 1997, was an eccentric filmmaker known for low-budget, often thematically controversial movies that spanned many genres, such as westerns, war epics and horror films. Saray, on the other hand, is one of the funniest people in Flin Flon and is also completely committed to the success of the town (he is part of the Visionaries group responsible for Inspiration 3.0).
This production carries a warning that it is for mature audiences only as it contains “erotic dementia”. We have no idea what this means, but strongly suggest that children should stay at home on the evening you go to the play. Tickets are already on sale for $20 each at Northern Rainbow’s End.
NorVA Centre and Gallery opened a new show with Artist’s Talk on March 3 in the Gallery. “Talking About Kayak Details” by renowned local artist Karen Clark and a series of paintings by her mother, Joyce Smedegaard, is the third in the local artists series by NorVA. Get into the Gallery to see this wonderful exhibit.
