It has been a fantastic summer season here in the Flin Flon/Creighton/Denare Beach area with some fabulous summer performances by great performers. We had Logan McKillop and Madeleine Roger back in May, Donny Parenteau in June, Wax Mannequin in July and the Osmond Davis Bluegrass Band in August, all at Johnny’s Social Club. We love our local performers, no doubt, but these out of town guests are making the trek to Flin Flon because they know we are a great audience. We are respectful and we listen to the music. We have an awesome venue. We show performers a great time in comfortable environments. We also serve fantastic meals! So be proud of yourselves, you are pretty cool!

The biggest and best event of the summer however, has to have been the beautiful Blueberry Jam Music Gathering. The musicians (and the sound), the food, the vibe and the tee-shirts were all brilliant! The volunteers who made it happen are to be commended.  They have already started to make plans for next year and are planning to formalize the committee structure to make sure everyone has maximum fun.  They will announce their first Annual General Meeting soon, to be held in Oct. 2018 so watch this space for a date and if you have ideas or simply want to help, come out and volunteer.

Jennifer Hanson will be returning to perform at Johnny’s Social Club on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.  She likely needs no introduction to Flin Flon and area music fans, however if you don’t know her work, come out and hear her sing, you will not be disappointed.  She can move effortlessly between genres, from pop and classic ‘80s rock to folk rock and jazz, sounding wonderful in all of them. She can also sing every national anthem in their native tongue (well almost every one!) so if the show slows down at all, you can get out your background flag of choice and prepare to stand.  Jennifer will be backed up on this occasion by the stellar group of musicians known as the Johnny’s Antisocial Club Band, that’s Craig Bancroft, Mark Kolt, Brent Lethbridge, Paul Shearer and featuring Susan Lethbridge on supporting vocals. We hope there are some tickets left for you to purchase if you are just now hearing about this performance.  It is at Johnny’s Social Club, 177 Green Street and tickets are $25. Start time is 7:30 pm.

The Flin Flon Arts Council and Amisk Tours are in the beginning stages of planning another winter excursion and need you all to indicate if you are interested in attending this fabulous event. Amisk Tours usually takes you on a magical mystery tour bus to Winnipeg to see the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s (RMTC) mid-winter musical. In January 2019 that musical is Roald Dahl’s Matilda, written by Australian comic genius, Tim Minchin (check him out on YouTube).  This is also RMTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper’s final season. Flin Flon and area audiences have benefitted from his support and expertise over the years, from his recommendation of a director for “Les Mis” to his audience question and answer sessions for Amisk Tours.

The actual tour consists of the return trip on a luxury coach, food and treats in the bus (this time, since the suggested departure date is Jan. 25, Robert Burns Day, there may be haggis served!), a two night stay at Inn at the Forks hotel, dinner at Smith restaurant and an after-theatre gala event at the hotel.

The cost has been $600 per person (double occupancy). Please e-mail margie_vic@hotmail.com to indicate your interest, soon.
