Cross-border clashes headlined last weekend’s Kit Classic basketball tournament in Creighton.

The Hapnot Kweens and Creighton Kodiaks butted heads throughout the tournament, with both schools entering junior and senior varsity level teams. The junior squads joined the tournament on short notice after last-minute cancellations from other schools. Teams from The Pas’ Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute (MBCI), Hudson Bay Composite High School Riders and the LP Miller Bears from Nipawin rounded out the field.

Hapnot and Creighton teams duelled three times in the tournament. The first matchup between the two saw Creighton’s A team beating the junior varsity Kweens Friday night. The junior Kweens were later eliminated Saturday afternoon after a hard-fought contest with LP Miller, while Creighton’s B team also bowed out early after a pair of losses against Nipawin and Hudson Bay.

After beating the junior Kweens, the Kodiaks A squad faced off against Hapnot’s seniors, with Hapnot coming out on top 48-38.

The loss sent Creighton to the B-side bracket, where they defeated MBCI and earned a spot in the tournament final and a rematch with the senior Kweens.

In a cross-border rubber match for the title, Hapnot overpowered a Kodiaks team that was playing its third consecutive game, winning 52-39 and claiming tournament glory.
