Former Flin Flon Bomber Paul Soubry took on a larger role in his second year at Augsburg College.

Last season, Soubry saw action in just one game for his Minneapolis-based school men’s hockey team. During the 2015-16 campaign, the Auggies won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs.

In 2016-17, Soubry enjoyed an increased role. The forward had three goals and seven points in 27 games for another successful Auggies team.

“It is tough having the thought process of feeling like you are not contributing and are only there to fill space,” Soubry said. “Through the help and support of my teammates, hockey coaches, and strength coaches, I worked hard in the offseason with the motivation to earn my spot in the lineup. This year we have had the same success as last year and I feel like I have contributed to my team’s success.”

The Winnipeg product enjoys studying at a small school, with an enrollment of about 2,500, in a big city.

“I enjoy the small class sizes and the courses they have,” Soubry said. “The school really supports their sports teams. …Education takes priority so I am able to strive in my studies while getting to play the sport that I love.”

He is double majoring in marketing and management. Soubry’s ultimate goal is to the general manager of a pro sports team.

“I believe that sport has been something to keep me organized, focused and competitive,” he said. “It has produced values, important virtues and lifelong friendships that I will carry with me in everything that I do.”

After playing midget hockey, Soubry joined the Bombers for the 2013-14 season. He enjoyed Flin Flon and the atmosphere of the Whitney Forum.

“The history of that city and rink makes it a unique experience and holy hockey ground,” he said. “The support and passion Bomber fans have was something I have never witnessed anywhere in junior hockey. Every game fans would be on you if you were playing bad and praise you when you were playing good.”

After a season in Flin Flon, Soubry played in the North American Hockey League for the Wichita Falls Wildcats. He then joined the Auggies.
