Creighton Kodiaks to close out season in Prince Albert

If you thought you were going to watch the Creighton Kodiaks play their final game at home Wednesday, then you’re all wet.

If you thought you were going to watch the Creighton Kodiaks play their final game at home Wednesday, then you’re all wet.

Or at least you would be if slushy conditions had not caused the football club to cancel the matchup for fear of ravaging their home field.

“We can’t get out on our field – too much water, it’s slush, too much snow, all of the above,” Kodiaks head coach Ryan Karakochuk said Monday.

With large volumes of water underneath the snow, Karakochuk says the field “would be all muck” and would easily get torn up by a game.

The team had planned to clear the snow off the field on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s tilt against Air Ronge.

With that no longer possible, plans were in the works Monday for Creighton and Air Ronge to play a neutral-site game on Wednesday. The game was later confirmed for 1 pm Saskatchewan time in Prince Albert.

If that could not be arranged, the Kodiaks planned to end their season after three games instead of the usual four.

The two-time defending Northern Saskatchewan Football League champion Kodiaks had already been knocked out of the playoffs.
