First of all, let’s deal with some myths and facts that have been shared at the Community Liaison Committee (CLC) meetings in Creighton.
Myths: We have to deal with this sludge, like it or not. We have a responsibility to store the waste because it came from Saskatchewan. We have a responsibility to store the waste here because it is safest for now.
Facts : This has never been done anywhere in the world. Sweden and Finland, whose burying technique differs a bit from ours, are still arguing over design flaws. We do not have to put up with this sludge. We have no responsibility to store it, either.
The waste was made by power companies in Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec. What was taken from Saskatchewan was raw uranium – yellow cake. These are not the same as spent nuclear fuel.
This waste is not the same as an x-ray. An x-ray is controlled and concentrated in one area, and optional for the person getting it. Manmade radiation differs from natural radiation, such as that from a banana or the sun.
This waste will be emitting radiation the whole way on the transportation route until the containers reach their destination and are switched to another container and buried. Whatever radiation dosage is received by humans during this transport time is worse for a child than an adult, and even worse yet for a fetus. The waste will be dangerous for over 100,000 years and more; some say over 250,000 years.
These are facts. There is so much more information out there to be learned. We owe it to our future generations to study more than is shared or answered in roundabout ways by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and the CLC.
There is a petition to be signed against this proposal, and you may contact me for information or to sign anytime. I am a leader only in so far as I am joining with thousands of others around the globe who do not support deep geological waste dumps.
The CLC has been asked by myself and a gentleman from Pelican Narrows if they know the definition of “liaison” at two different meetings because the people feel they are not here for, or listening to, the people.
The CLC has been confronted for being pro-waste-storage by various people at their meetings because of some comments we have heard, such as a member being okay with waste being buried here and there being a supposed need to deal with this waste, like it or not.
Others as well as myself have requested speakers with a critical opinion of this proposal. We need independent critical opinion, as there are respectfully two sides to the arguments for a deep geological repository.
