Western Canada Cup folds, leaves void in junior hockey

The Western Canada Cup (WCC) is no more.

The Western Canada Cup (WCC) is no more.

The news comes after all four junior A leagues in Western Canada – the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and SJHL – agreed to end the tourney.

The tournament pitted the four league champions and a host team against each other for two spots in the RBC Cup, the national junior A championship.

The most recent tournament, held April 29 to May 7 in Penticton, BC, saw the host Penticton Vees and the AJHL champion Brooks Bandits earn the top two spots.

No teams from any of the four leagues had submitted a bid to host next year’s tournament.

The end of the WCC could potentially mean the return of the Anavet Cup, a series between the SJHL and MJHL champions for a spot in the RBC Cup. The Anavet Cup ended in 2011-12 in favour of the WCC format, along with the Doyle Cup, a similar competition between the BCHL and AJHL champions.
