Over-the-air CTV stopped in Snow Lake

The days of free television in Snow Lake are officially over.

CTV shut down its transmitter in the town last month, five years after the only other over-the-air channel, CBC, did the same.

Bell Media, which owns CTV, had secured regulatory approval to close transmitters in Snow Lake and 39 other small markets across Canada effective September 2017.

Bell did not return an email asking why the Snow Lake transmitter was instead shut down in June.

Flin Flon MLA Tom Lindsey, whose riding includes Snow Lake, said he received a complaint from a constituent about the decision and was sure other people would also be concerned.

Bell argued the small-market transmitters were costly to maintain and attracted limited viewership in light of the number of people who have cable or satellite.

Snow Lake town council opposed the closure, passing a resolution last year calling for the transmitter to remain operational.

CTV remains available over-the-air in Flin Flon.
