No strike planned as IAM rejects offer

IAM Local 1848 members have overwhelmingly rejected Hudbay's final contract offer, but the union is not planning to go on strike at this time.

IAM Local 1848 members have overwhelmingly rejected Hudbay's final contract offer, but the union is not planning to go on strike at this time.

On Sunday and Monday, the union, representing 190 tradespeople, voted 96 per cent against an offer that would have boosted hourly wages by $3.75 to start the third and final year.

"At this point we want a collective agreement. That's our goal," said Rene Beauchamp, president of IAM.

"We want Hudbay back to the table. We are hoping to start bargaining in good faith."

Beauchamp's comments alleviated concerns in the community that a rejection of Hudbay's offer would lead to an immediate strike notice with workers walking off the job as early as Thursday at midnight.

Mayor Cal Huntley said he was happy to hear the union wants to go back to the bargaining table and continue to try and resolve the matter.

Hudbay's offer to IAM included hourly pay raises of $1 in year one, $1.25 in year two and $1.50 in year three along with pension improvements.

The vote saw 87 per cent of IAM members in Flin Flon and Snow Lake cast ballots.
