New and returning events in the cards for Culture Days

Proposed additions to schedule excite organizer

Flin Flon’s Culture Days are right around the corner, with organizer Crystal Kolt hoping it will be the biggest celebration yet.

The cultural coordinator for the Flin Flon Arts Council says more events have been planned compared to last year.

“There’s been a ton of things,” Kolt said in an interview last week.

“Last year, we did 104 events. Right now, we’re already at 105.”

Since launching in 2010, Flin Flon’s Culture Days celebrations have become a marquee event and one of the busiest Culture Days events in Canada.

This year’s event has received its own dedicated webpage from the Culture Days
Innovation Labs.

It’s the only Culture Days event in Manitoba and one of only nine in Canada to have their own page.

“We’re so proud of our community. It’s nice to have it recognized nationally, too,” said Kolt. “It’s an honour and a privilege to be part of it.”

Many events are returning to the schedule from last year, including the Human Books event at the Flin Flon Public Library and the Superstars events for area schoolchildren.

Kolt is excited with several proposed changes to the calendar, including the Taste of the North event.

That event will see restaurants and food trucks gather in an area near Main Street, offering a spot for the best local grub Flin Flon has to offer.

Kolt also said the Wild Things outdoor market, held at Creekside Park, will be expanded this year.

The market will feature a performance location for local musicians and include a tavern for the first time, featuring Canadian beer, cider and other alcohol.
