A three-way split between the City of Flin Flon, provincial government and federal government will see Flin Flon’s sewer and water infrastructure upgraded.

Council voted to enter into a contribution agreement under the Canada-Manitoba New Building Canada Fund during its regular council meeting on Nov. 21.

The agreement will see the City spend $3.96 million over three years, with each party contributing $1.32 million to the fund.

“There are about seven things that are a little bit more critical than other things when it comes to our water and sewer infrastructure,” said Charles Boulet, director of operations and works for the City of
Flin Flon.

“They have to do with upgrades to heating plants one and three, and upgrades to a valve vault and reservoir. And then there are two other areas that need new piping to be changed out. One is under the tunnel under the cenotaph and the other is at the causeway near Chicken Chef.

Boulet said the piping in the tunnel is the original piping.

“If you don’t upgrade those lines, because it’s such a difficult area to work in, if you don’t prepare ahead of time it falls under an emergency [rather] than preventative maintenance, and you lose all water to the uptown area.”

Boulet was pleased the City would receive the grant.

“The grant is a good deal for us. It’s a three-way contribution…it’s a
good split.”
