Highway 10 paving from Flin Flon to Bakers Narrows will conclude in 2017: province

The provincial government is blaming Mother Nature for pushing the completion date of a Highway 10 upgrade into next year.

The province had hoped to finish repaving the 20-km stretch of highway between Flin Flon and Bakers Narrows by the end of 2016.

“Unfortunately, due to the onset of an early winter in the North with very poor weather, this project was not able to be completed,” a government spokesman told The Reminder.

The work will now be finished by next summer, the spokesman said.

While some stretches of the highway have been paved, others have not. Due to heaving, motorists have also been forced to slow down when driving over culverts.

Both of those matters will be addressed with the final paving, said the spokesman.

The highway project, which included extensive rock blasting to increase driver visibility and decrease the sharpness of curves, began in 2014 and continued in 2015 and 2016. The total price tag will be about $24 million, according to the province.

Asked whether there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new section of highway next year, the spokesman said that will be determined once the work is closer to completion.
