Hapnot comes up short at zones, Creighton off to conferences

Hapnot’s Kings and Kweens senior basketball teams came close, but couldn’t clinch first place at last weekend’s zone championships.

Hapnot’s Kings and Kweens senior basketball teams came close, but couldn’t clinch first place at last weekend’s zone championships.

The Kweens went 3-1 through the round robin with wins over the HBOIERC Huskies (54-27), Otter Nelson River Nikiks (69-33) and Margaret Barbour Collegiate (73-46).

The Kweens suffered their only round robin loss to the host Thompson’s RD Parker Trojans (43-27) game.

The strong performance earned the Kweens the second seed and a ticket to the tournament finals, where they had a rematch against the Trojans.

Despite a strong overall performance, Hapnot lost to RD Parker (54-42).

The Kings fared no better, going 2-2 in their round robin. Wins against HBOIERC and Otter Nelson River were followed by a 71-41 loss to Margaret Barbour and 91-52 loss to eventual champs RD Parker. The Kings finished third.

Neither Hapnot team has earned a spot at this year’s provincials, set to tip off in Winnipeg March 16, 17 and 18. One wildcard qualification slot is available in each tournament, but it is not yet known which school will qualify.
