Flin Flon city councillor Leslie Beck is running for the Liberals in next year’s provincial election.

After days of rumours, she confirmed to The Reminder that she accepted the party’s nomination on Monday.

This marks Beck’s second attempt to become MLA of Flin Flon. She unsuccessfully vied for the NDP nomination in 2011, losing to Clarence Pettersen.

A retired RCMP officer, she was elected to city council in 2014. By law she will have to resign her council seat in order to run for MLA.

Beck hopes to take the riding away from the NDP for the first time since 1969, but she doesn’t yet know who her New Democrat challenger will be.

Flin Flon’s Tom Lindsey, a retired union official, is challenging Pettersen, the incumbent MLA, for the NDP nomination. The party will announce the winner on Friday.

While announcing a new seniors’ housing complex in Flin Flon on Monday, Pettersen pledged that he’s “not going to stop” working for his constituency.

“Now, having said that, some of you are going to ask, ‘Well, what happens on [Friday],’” he told invited dignitaries. “Well, what happens, happens, and if I win, I win. If I lose, I win. When a door closes, another door opens, and we’ll just see what happens. But it’s been an honour serving this community and if I get to continue serving this community, it’s great.”

The Reminder will have more on Beck’s candidacy and the NDP nomination.
