A lightning storm last week sparked a number of small wildfires in the Flin Flon region.

Two fires, located near Schist Lake and Payuk Lake, were reported on August 2, the day of the storm.

According to Manitoba Sustainable Development, lightning strikes started both fires. Both fires were relatively small, with neither growing over 0.5 hectares.

Water bombers were summoned and both fires were extinguished.

The Schist Lake fire was located about six kilometres south of Channing.

Across the border, several fires were reported in northern Saskatchewan.

According to Saskatchewan Environ-ment’s daily provincial fire report, four uncontained fires were burning in the Denare Beach Fire Protection Area (FPA) as of Tuesday, August 8.

One fire, located north of Ward Lake, was about 15 kilometres north of the Flin Flon-Creighton area, close to the provincial border.

Other fires were located near Granite Lake, Jan Lake and Vagg Lake, all near Highway 106. Each fire was within 100 kilometres of Flin Flon and Creighton.

Three fires, located at Neagle Lake, Corneille Lake and the Sturgeon-Weir River, had been contained.

Six fires within the FPA are classified as requiring “ongoing assistance.” None of the six fires were within 50 kilometres of Flin Flon.

Another fire, located on the southwest shore of Amisk Lake near Balsam Lake, was extinguished last weekend.
