A company aiming to reopen a long-idle gold mine outside Flin Flon as early as next year is “extremely encouraged” by early exploration results at the site.

Minnova Corporation recently unveiled results from a surface grab sample program at the PL mine site near Sherridon.

Prospecting and geological mapping along conductors and magnetic lineaments along strike of the PL deposit identified two new gold showings, the PL North and J showings, the company said.

“Initial results from our summer program are extremely encouraging and point to the untested exploration potential of the property,” Gorden Glenn, CEO of Minnova, said in a news release. “No field work has been carried out on the PL mine site and surrounding area in over 30 years. As previously released, the recent detailed infill drilling program on the PL deposit has advanced our technical understanding of the PL deposit geology and structural controls that may control gold mineralization.”

Geological mapping and prospecting of the two new gold occurrences and several other targets along strike from the PL mine is ongoing, the company said.

Minnova said the goal of its remaining summer exploration program will be to determine the extent of the gold mineralization and how the new gold showings correlate to the PL deposit.

The Toronto-based company previously completed a preliminary economic assessment showing the PL mine would produce 48,100 ounces of gold per year over a 10-year-plus mine life.

Last month, Glenn told The Reminder that his goal is to see PL mine – formerly known as the Puffy Lake mine – reopen in August or September of 2018.

He estimated the project would require upwards of 100 workers during the production years.
