Economic development officer steps down, hunt begins for replacement

Huntley cites possibilities with ‘near-future potential’

Along with several area representatives, Flin Flon mayor Cal Huntley is looking for a new regional economic development officer.

Flin Flon mayor Cal Huntley says the search for a new regional economic development officer (EDO) will not hinder efforts to strengthen the local economy.

The City of Flin Flon, Town of Creighton and Northern Village of Denare Beach have begun advertising for a new EDO following the resignation of Perry Trusty.

“We will continue to pursue initiatives and conversations for opportunities that were started through the Regional Economic Development Committee (REDC) until the role is again filled,” said Huntley, referring to a committee that includes representation from the three municipalities as well as local business leaders.

“Very seldom does anything happen overnight, so one must have the patience to persevere. There are a couple of possibilities that Perry initiated that show some near-future potential.”

Huntley sees the position as a valuable asset for the region.

“It’s important or we wouldn’t be trying to fill it,” he said. “The right person may bring and will help maintain a focus on developing and diversifying the area. It keeps the REDC more focused and committed.” The REDC announced the creation of the EDO position less than a year ago. The position is funded by the three municipalities.

Trusty was hired in the fall of 2016 before resigning last month. Advertising for a replacement also began last month. The REDC itself was formed in September 2016, aiming to support local businesses while attracting new industry and trade to the area. It’s a goal that Huntley believes in.

“I feel just creating the environment for economic  development helps move things forward,” he said. “Given all the positives we’ve seen lately in the community and through the news, I would say the indicators point to it being successful so far.”

Huntley pointed to several  business developments in the area as examples of economic growth,
including ongoing construction of the new Flin Flon General Hospital emergency department and the new Co-op store.

He also mentioned Tim Hortons and Dairy Queen as examples of economic growth. Tim Hortons is set to open a kiosk at the Creighton Petro-Canada station by the end of 2017, while Dairy Queen aims to open a
Flin Flon location by mid-2019.
