Drilling aims to pinpoint Flin Flon region’s next mine

As exploration results at 777 mine disappoint officials, drills have begun turning outside Flin Flon in an effort to uncover another viable mine in the region.

As exploration results at 777 mine disappoint officials, drills have begun turning outside Flin Flon in an effort to uncover another viable mine in the region.

Callinex Mines, an exploration company, said Monday, August 10 that it had commenced the second phase of a drilling campaign near the community.

The goal is to discover high-grade copper- and zinc-rich massive sulphide mineralization within close proximity to Hudbay’s 777 mine.

Callinex is targeting two properties. The first is the Flin Flon Project, a narrow, 2,455-hectare swath of land that extends about a dozen kilometres north of
Flin Flon.

The second property is the Pine Bay Project, a semi-rectangular, 6,000-hectare property about a dozen kilometres east of Flin Flon.

Between the two properties, Callinex plans to drill five holes totalling some 2,500 metres.

At Pine Bay, the company said it plans to test several newly identified geophysical targets located at depth and along strike of a “highly prospective” deposit known as the Sourdough deposit.

The new targets were identified earlier this year and have “significant potential to represent massive sulphide mineralization,” Callinex said in a news release.

In particular, Callinex pointed to target PB-10, which “represents a large and highly conductive untested geophysical target.”

Callinex said PB-10 has a starting depth of 350 metres and trends along strike toward the long-defunct Centennial mine once operated by HBM&S, Hudbay’s predecessor.

Callinex said it has identified “significant exploration potential” between the Sourdough deposit and Centennial mine about two km to the southwest.

The Sourdough deposit area has not been drilled using modern geophysics, the company said, with most historic drilling completed more than 65 years ago.

Depending on the new results from the Sourdough deposit, Callinex has outlined three additional drill targets between the Pine Bay and Flin Flon projects that are accessible this summer.

Those targets were also identified through a geophysical program undertaken earlier this year. They are located near mapped rhyolites (an igneous, volcanic rock) with limited or no drilling previously completed, the company said.

Based in Vancouver, Callinex said its focus is on discovering the next copper-zinc mine within the Flin Flon mining district. Its motto? “Extending an 85+ year history in Flin Flon, MB.”

Callinex’s drilling comes as Hudbay reports disappointing drill results from 777 mine and encouraging results at Lalor mine near Snow Lake.
