An external investigation is underway after a Deschambault Lake RCMP officer apparently shot and wounded a man in the First Nations community.

According to the RCMP, officers from the Deschambault Lake detachment responded to multiple complaints of a firearm being discharged on the reserve on Sunday, August 20.

“While responding to these complaints, a Deschambault Lake RCMP member discharged his weapon,” read an RCMP news release. “An adult male received what is believed to be a gunshot wound and received medical attention at the local nursing station.”

The RCMP consider any member-involved discharge of a firearm to be a serious incident. As such, the Saskatchewan RCMP requested an independent, external investigation of the incident.

The Saskatoon Police Service has agreed to conduct the investigation. The RCMP said they have also requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.

The officer involved in the incident has been assigned administrative duties, RCMP said.

Police have charged a 31-year-old Deschambault Lake man in relation to the initial complaints of a firearm being discharged.

The accused faces seven charges: pointing a firearm, possessing a weapon contrary to order, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm and failure to comply with a probation order.

Deschambault Lake is a community of 1,194 people located a 140-km drive northwest of Creighton. It is part of the Peter Ballantyne
Cree Nation.
