Demolition work starts at armoury site

North of 53 Consumers Co-op relocation project takes another step forward

After sitting derelict and mostly unused for several years, demolition work has begun on the Flin Flon armoury.

The demolition is the next step toward the relocaiton of the North of 53 Consumers’ Co-op to the site.

Workers started removing asbestos from the lower building at the site on Tuesday.

Other planned work, including blasting to level the site, dismantling and moving existing buildings on the property and brush removal, will be done at a later date.

“Right now, they’re removing asbestos from one building,” said
Co-op general manager Tom Therien. “Then, they’ll take the buildings down and they’ll do blasting.”

No concrete timetable has been set for the demolition work, but Therien is confident that work on the site will be done on schedule.

“The store will be open and running by the spring of 2018,” he said.

The armoury site had been recently used as the location for the Habitat 53° ReStore.

The ReStore building was removed from the site this summer after Co-Op took possession of the property.
