They served so that others may live.

The local branch of CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association) has unveiled a memorial plaque at the Flin Flon Municipal Airport.

The plaque lists 10 individuals, now deceased, who each spent more than five years volunteering with CASARA.

“Time being what it is, people pass on and we thought it would be fitting to honour these people,” Gerry Angell, area commander for CASARA, said during a Saturday, Feb. 4 plaque unveiling.

Current CASARA members joined loved ones of the honoured members for the ceremony. Sheila Boyes, daughter of CASARA’s first local commander Essie Douglas, removed a CASARA flag to reveal a black-plated plaque in the airport’s public seating area.

The plaque honours Bob Douglas, Essie Douglas, Rick Nickerson, Lorna Martin, Maureen Lunam, Rudy Volden, Dan Trojan, Glen Sorensen, Ernie Willetts and Spencer Hanson.

Above their names are the words, “In Remembrance Of Flin Flon CASARA Members Who Served ‘That Others May Live.’”

CASARA’s local branch was established in 1987.
