Creighton will still have school division, no STC

Wednesday’s Saskatchewan budget was a case of “good news, bad news” for Creighton and area. While the Creighton School Division will remain a standalone entity, the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will cease operations this spring.

Wednesday’s Saskatchewan budget was a case of “good news, bad news” for Creighton and area.

While the Creighton School Division will remain a standalone entity, the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will cease operations this spring.

The province had considered amalgamating school divisions as a cost-saving measure, saying it would announce its decision in the budget.

The budget contains “no major school division boundary changes” and provides funding to Saskatchewan’s 28 existing divisions, a government news release stated.

A public consultation showed “strong support” for existing school division boundaries, according to the release.

Meanwhile, Crown Investments Minister Joe Hargrave announced provincial subsidies for STC would end, leading to the Crown corporation being wound down.

STC provides scheduled freight and passenger bus services in and out of Creighton. All told, the corporation operates 27 routes across Saskatchewan.

The province said freight will continue to be accepted for delivery until May 19, with passenger services ceasing on May 31.

The Reminder will have more on the budget and its local impact in our Wednesday, March 29 print edition.
