Creighton town council report: submissions open for storm sewer project

A storm sewer replacement project is the next big item on the agenda for Creighton town council.

A storm sewer replacement project is the next big item on the agenda for Creighton town council.

Council members met Monday, May 29 at the town office to discuss the upcoming work with Ryan McDowell, technical services manager with Associated Engineering, a firm that will work on the project.

Multiple aspects of the storm sewer replacement project were discussed, including asphalt replacement, overflow accommodation, landscaping and how new water and sewer lines will tie into existing infrastructure on Main Street.

Request for proposal submissions for the project will be open until June 6, after which a bid will be selected.

Financial statements

Last year’s financial statements for the Town of Creighton are now in.

Councillors reviewed the statements during their May 24 meeting. The statements, reviewed by local accounting firm Kendall & Pandya, show a total of $18,129,177 in town assets as of December 31, 2016.

Most of the assets are in the form of tangible capital assets, while $6,880,365 of the total is attributed to total current assets.

Councillors were pleased with the statements.

“It went all good, no areas of concern,” said Ald. Colleen Stallard.

Sportex boilers

Council is looking to a grant program to help pay for upgrades to the Creighton Sportex.

Two new, energy-efficient boilers will be installed, replacing older, less-efficient models.

To help fund the replacement, council has applied to the Northern Capital Grants program. The program may cover up to 80 per cent of expenses, estimated at $120,000.

“We have an allocation left. This is our last year when we can use it,” said town administrator Paula Muench. “Most of it will be used for water and sewer upgrades. We would definitely qualify for it.”

Fire report

The Creighton Volunteer Fire Department was summoned three times in March and April.

The calls were detailed in the department’s latest recent fire chief’s report, submitted to council.

Firefighters responded to a false alarm at a Creighton Avenue home on March 10 and a lift assist on April 22, also on Creighton Avenue.

The third call came on April 19, when the Flin Flon Fire Department requested mutual aid for a house fire on Callinan Street.

Firefighters from both departments fought the blaze. The home was a complete loss and was demolished days after the fire.

Trailer rent

A change to the town’s trailer rent bylaws received its third and final reading.

The new bylaw increases the town’s trailer rent and licensing fees by $10 each, marking a $20 increase. The new bylaw will go into effect on August 1.
