Two measures regarding unsightly properties were discussed at the Creighton town council meeting on June 27.

Council voted to issue orders to a number of homes still regarded as untidy or unsightly. An initial round of letters was sent out on May 17, but some properties have not been adequately cleaned.

Some properties will likely be taken off the town’s list in the near future.

“[Mayor] Bruce [Fidler] and I toured around some of these places and we may take some off the list. They did do some cleaning there,” said Paula Muench, chief administrative officer for the Town of Creighton.

In total, Muench estimated around five properties have not responded sufficiently to the request for cleanup.

“The majority of them have been cleaned up. The homeowners are very responsible in doing that. There’s still a few that need a little bit more attention,” said Fidler.

The homeowners themselves will have to clean up the properties. If they do not respond to the town order, municipal crews will be dispatched to clean the areas, with the cost of the work being added to the owner’s property taxes.

“If we have to step in, then it would be. We’re hoping they will do it,” said Muench.

“Most of the time, the homeowners do it themselves,” added Fidler.

Meanwhile, council made a motion to start tax enforcement proceedings on a home on White Street.

The home, located near the Creighton Sportex, has been abandoned since the owner passed away last year. Since then, the residence has been abandoned and is partially overgrown.

“The homeowner is deceased and it hasn’t been maintained since,” said Fidler.

It is unclear who is now in possession of the property.
