Cranberry Portage tax rate down, assessments up

Property tax rates in Cranberry Portage have dropped, but that won’t mean savings for all homeowners. In its 2016 budget, the RM of Kelsey lowered the residential mill rate for Cranberry Portage by 16.3 per cent over last year.

Property tax rates in Cranberry Portage have dropped, but that won’t mean savings for all homeowners.

In its 2016 budget, the RM of Kelsey lowered the residential mill rate for Cranberry Portage by 16.3 per cent over last year.

But with revised property assessments taking effect this year, some homeowners will pay more and some will pay less depending on their assessment, said Sean Madrigga, accounting technician for the RM.

“All properties saw some sort of increase in assessment,” he added.

The RM – which governs about 2,100 people in and around Cranberry Portage and around The Pas – sets a separate residential tax rate for The Pas area. That rate decreased by 17.4 per cent this year.

The RM expects overall spending to
total $3.43 million – a 0.9 per cent decrease over 2015.

Transportation services, including road construction, drainage and equipment costs, among other expenses, are projected to consume $1.27 million, or 37 per cent of the budget.

Madrigga said the only capital project currently underway is the expansion of a water line to the Ralls Island area east of The Pas.

The RM’s elected council unanimously approved the new budget in May,
Madrigga said.
