Company and union representatives say an undisclosed international company has put forth a letter of intent to purchase the Tolko paper mill in The Pas, media outlets reported this week.

“I’m cautious at this point. I’m hopeful,” Paul McKie, the national representative for the union that represents most Tolko workers in The Pas, told CBC on Tuesday.

Premier Brian Pallister declined to discuss details of the potential deal with the Canadian Press.

“I don’t want to be premature in my comments and I don’t want to raise hopes,” he said.

Tolko has announced plans to close its mill in The Pas as of Dec. 2. The mill is the single largest employer in the community, with 332 direct workers and another 250 or so contract loggers.
