Graduating students with an interest in entrepreneurship have a chance to win some cash for post-secondary education with a new award from Community Futures Greenstone.

The entrepreneurial spirit award competition will see a recipient from Hapnot Collegiate, Many Faces or Creighton Community School walk away with $1,500 in tuition for online entrepreneur training through Athabasca University.

“We thought this would be a great way to support a student who wants to explore entrepreneurship as a career,” said Krista Lemcke, business development coordinator with Greenstone.

Lemcke said the region, too, could benefit from promoting entrepreneurship in young people.

“By encouraging and growing local youth interest in entrepreneurship, we are helping to build a new generation of innovators that can ensure our communities continue to exist and grow in unison with and branch out from a single industry-reliant economy.”

Strong turnout and enthusiastic participation in several of Greenstone’s other workshops geared toward youth tells the organization there is an appetite among local young people to innovate and create. Lemcke noted two of the students who participated in last year’s Biz Kids Biz Camp – a program intended to inspire an interest in entrepreneurship as a career path in youth – are still successfully operating their businesses.

Students who wish to make a submission for the award must create a three to five minute video explaining their interest in entrepreneurship, a pitch for a business or product, and how the award would assist the entrant with their career goals. The video must then be uploaded on YouTube and a link must be sent to send to [email protected]. It will then be uploaded onto the Greenstone website and circulated on social media.

The deadline for applications is May 31.
