Candidate Beverley Wheeler: Denare Beach

What would be your top priorities if elected? I am a strong believer in fiscal responsibility and the long-term feasibility for our community. I would like to see the council provide the best resources for its residents, but not deplete the finances.

I am a strong believer in fiscal responsibility and the long-term feasibility for our community. I would like to see the council provide the best resources for its residents, but not deplete the finances.

The economy of the area has been on the minds of all residents for a number of years. The upcoming closing of the 777 mine in 2020 is of course a concern, and I would like to ensure that the community is prepared for any downturn that may occur. I believe that our future lies in economic development and would be interested in pursuing this topic.

I am a strong advocate of the fire department, recreation board and museum committee, and I believe that their services contribute to the health and contentment of our residents.

Crime has become a major concern for many Denare Beach residents. As a councillor, how would you approach this issue?

Over the years the Village has struggled with vandalism from young people as many other communities have. It was always a relief when the perpetrators grew up in to fine, upstanding citizens or moved away.

Unfortunately there always seem to be new vandals that cause damage and destruction. A curfew bylaw has been in place for a number of years. A community police officer would come at a considerable cost, but a community crime watch group that worked closely with the RCMP may be a better option.

What skills would you bring to  village council?

In the position of administrator for almost 30 years, I have become familiar with the financial and general operations of a community. I was a board member of the Northern Municipal Trust Account Management Board for 15 years and served one term on the Urban Municipal Administrators Association board. I have observed many difficult decisions and although I was involved in the council committee discussions, I am looking forward to being one of the decision-makers.
