Program to amp up the giving

The Flin Flon Friendship Centre is expecting more clients this year than in the past as its Christmas Gift Program marks its 20th year. The centre’s Jeremiah Herrmann says they have “revamped” the program to allow more families to reap the benefits.

The Flin Flon Friendship Centre is expecting more clients this year than in the past as its Christmas Gift Program marks its 20th year.
The centre’s Jeremiah Herrmann says they have “revamped” the program to allow more families to reap the benefits.
Last year, the program saw 98 families and 279 children receive gifts at Christmastime.
Appointments will be faster this year, with nearly half the time available to clients to choose a gift.
Parents and guardians are entitled to select one gift for each of their children under the age of 17.
Herrmann hopes by increasing the number of time slots available that the Gift Program will see 150 families this year.
Those looking to utilize the program must register with the Friendship Centre between Dec. 2-12 with either Herrmann or Virginia Gardner.
Parents and guardians are asked to bring their health cards when they register.
“And please don’t bring your children” to your appointment, said Herrmann. “Then it will be a surprise on Christmas morning.”
Parents and guardians are asked to attend the appointment they receive – between Dec. 15-24 – or they will move to a waiting list.
Wrapping paper will be provided during the appointments so parents can wrap the gifts before leaving the Friendship Centre.
Donations
The Friendship Centre is currently seeking and accepting donations to ensure there are enough gifts for those who register.
“We’ve already had some donations come in as well as a few gifts,” said Herrmann.
“The objective is to provide an opportunity for parents [and] guardians to give their children a gift at Christmas when circumstances may otherwise prevent them from doing so.”
Last year, the Gift Program provided gifts to children in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach, Pelican Narrows, Deschambault Lake, Cranberry Portage and Sherridon.
